U.S. Tartan Day Official...

If you live in the U.S. and have Scottish ancestry, make sure you circle April 6 on your calendar. That is now the official U.S. "Tartan Day." The recent decision by the U.S. Congress was made in recognition of the contribution that Scotland has made towards the development of the United States. The resolution was put forward by Trent Lott, the Senate majority leader, and was passed unanimously.

Scots connections in U.S. Senate

Mr Lott's mother is 57-year-old Iona Watson, and his grandmother was a Buchanan from the shores of Loch Lomond. Speaker of the Senate, Newt Gingrich, also backed the resolution. Mr. Gingrich's original surname before adoption was McPherson. JKMahone

Scottish Enlightenment

It not surprizing to learn that almost half the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence of 1776 were of Scots descent, many from the Scottish Enlightenment movement. Blair Urquhart.
